In this episode, Helene demonstrates "stitch-in-the-ditch" quilting and a single-fold binding for the Friendship Star.
STEPS WE ACCOMPLISHED TODAY:
#13: Trim up the edges of the Block
#14: Cut the backing and flannel; use spray adhesive to fix together
#15: Stitch-in-the-Ditch (use clear filament thread)
#16: Trim threads from Block
#17: Make Single-Fold Binding by pressing binding in 1/2 lengthwise
#18: Pin binding onto Block, starting at center point, but leaving a 1" tail free
#19: Make a mark 1/4" from the edge of the Block on the binding
#20: Sew binding on Block (use 1/4" seam). Stop at the 1/4" mark, backstitch and release Block from machine. Fold binding up to the top edge of the Block, creating a miter. Pin in place. Measure another 1/4" mark on the second side of the Block. Begin sewing at the the top edge of the Block and stop at the 1/4" mark. Repeat the mitering fold & pin. Repeat this process on all 4 sides of the Block.
#21: On the last side of the Block, trim the binding and have it slip into the beginning on the binding. (At this point you can turn the ends of the binding to eliminate raw edges.) Stitch last bit of binding in place.
#22: Trim threads and any excess fabric in the corners. Press open, fold the binding to the back of the block. Pin in place. As you come to a corner, fold the corner into a miter. Pin.
#23: Use a whip-stitch to sew the binding in place.
